Any repair work requires zeal and diligence, and the preparation of walls for painting is especially. After all, a thin layer of paint, whether it is water -based or oil, will not hide the surface defects, but only find them even more. So that your walls at the end of the repair have the perfect look, it is necessary to carefully carry out all the preparatory work.
Before starting work on preparing walls for painting, free the walls from the old decoration: wallpaper, paints, poor -quality plaster. The owners of freshly coated walls pass this stage. They can only apply the finish putty and after drying it to walk along the walls with an emery skin. Everyone else will have to work hard. To facilitate your work, use a spatula, use special liquids to remove old wall coatings.
To strengthen the walls and prepare them for putty, apply a wide brush to their surface a primer penetration. If you purchase a primer with special disinfectant additives, this will also be a good prevention against the fungus and mold. The primed surface must dry for 5-6 hours.
The next stage is alignment. You can eliminate irregularities using a starting putty. You do not have to wise over its preparation – a mixture of the desired composition and consistency is obtained by breeding dry putty with ordinary water according to the instructions. Apply it with a wide spatula. The putty will fall more evenly if you use a nylon mesh with a 2×2 mm cell size for it. It is especially possible to recommend it to beginners to achieve a good result with small skills. Let this layer of putty dry well before applying the finish, otherwise when dried at the same time two layers, the wall can be covered with bubbles. In a warm room, putty dries for at least a day, in cool – much longer.
Apply the finishing putty especially carefully, with a thin layer of 1-2 mm, trying not to leave stains. Run the walls after drying the last layer using sandpaper – this will give them special smoothness and gloss, eliminate even the smallest irregularities. We fix the result with a primer – and admire the work of our hands!
During the repair of the apartment, before starting the painting of the walls, you need to protect all neighboring surfaces from possible contaminants: ceiling, floor, door jambs, windows frame. Just “hide” them under painting tape, so as not by chance not stained with a roller or brush.
