Ontario imposes 25% electricity tax on three US states

Ontario Governor Doug Ford has announced a 25% tariff on electricity supplied to Minnesota, Michigan and New York in response to anti-Canadian tariffs from the United States.

“Until these [American] tariffs are lifted, until the threat of these tariffs is gone forever, Ontario will not back down,” Ford told reporters in Toronto, whose remarks were shown on CTV. Ford added that his region would continue to exert “maximum pressure” on the United States. Ontario’s measure would affect about 1.5 million homes and other buildings in the three U.S. states.

On March 4, the U.S. administration imposed tariffs of 25% on virtually all imports from Canada and Mexico, and raised tariffs on goods from China from 10% to 20%. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau then said that the United States had started a trade war against Canada, which is why Ottawa imposed retaliatory tariffs on Washington. Canada is imposing tariffs of 25% on C$155 billion ($107.4 billion) worth of American goods, he said.
