The foldable iPad Pro will receive Face ID, placed under the screen, reported Chinese insider Digital Chat Station. It is possible that not the entire set of sensors, including an IR projector and an IR camera, will be moved under the display, but only the projector.
A metalens may be used for this, although the exact term is still unclear due to possible translation errors.
It is noted that we are talking specifically about the foldable iPad Pro, and not about the foldable iPhone, which is expected next year. Apple previously wanted to use a similar approach to reduce the Dynamic Island on its smartphones: first place a projector under the screen, and then, after several generations, a camera. This upgrade was expected in the iPhone 17, but now it has probably been postponed for revision.
It is also reported that the foldable iPad Pro will receive an 18.8-inch display. This is larger than any MacBook, but smaller than the iMac with its 24 inches.
Apple has completely switched to Face ID in the iPhone, abandoning Touch ID after the discontinuation of the iPhone SE. In the iPad, the fingerprint sensor remains in the basic, Air and mini versions, but the Pro models already use Face ID only.
